When Articulate is more tool than you need
Articulate 360 is the most capable e-learning authoring suite in common use, and for a full-time instructional designer it is usually the right purchase. Its list price, checked on Articulate's own pricing page in August 2026, is $1,449 USD per user per year for the Personal plan and $1,749 for Teams. The case for an alternative is not that Storyline is weak — it is that the price and the learning curve assume authoring is your job, which leaves out the teacher or trainer who needs a handful of trackable lessons a year and has no budget line for a four-figure seat.

Buy Storyline if any of this is true
This is the honest half of the page, and it is first on purpose. Storyline does several things this product does not do at all, and no amount of price advantage substitutes for a capability that is simply absent.
- You need branching scenarios where the path depends on earlier answers
- You need software simulations — recording an application and letting a learner practise in it
- You need a question bank with randomised draws and retake policies
- You have compliance requirements that name a specific authoring standard
- Authoring is somebody's full-time job, which makes a per-seat licence ordinary rather than exceptional
Consider something smaller if this is closer
The people the price leaves out are not a niche. Most trackable training is not a branching simulation; it is a deck with some questions in it that somebody needs to record completions for.
- The lesson is slides with activities and graded questions in them, not a branching simulation
- You author a few times a term, not every week
- Nobody in the room has the time to learn a full authoring suite
- You need the package to load in your LMS and report a score, and that is the entire requirement
- Learner data is not allowed to leave your infrastructure
The two differences that are not about price
A Learning Record Store is included here and is a separate purchase with Articulate. If you are heading towards xAPI or cmi5, that is a second vendor and a second decision you do not have to make yet.
And there is a self-hosted deployment, which matters in exactly one situation but matters absolutely: an organisation whose data-residency rules mean learner records cannot sit on someone else's infrastructure. That is usually a hard requirement rather than a preference, and it rules tools in or out before anything else is discussed.
What you should not take on trust
Prices move. The figures above were read from Articulate's own pricing page in August 2026 and are list prices — volume and multi-year deals are common and are not published. Check the vendor before making a decision on a number from a comparison page, including this one.
And this product is early: several things that exist in the codebase are switched off for this release, so what is described on this site is what is available, not what is planned. If a capability matters to you and it is not described somewhere on these pages, assume it is not there.
Questions
Can Mosra open Storyline files?
No. Storyline's project format is proprietary and there is no import path. What can be moved is a PowerPoint deck, which Mosra imports directly.
Does Mosra do branching?
No. A deck is linear, and conditional paths belong in a tool built for them — which on this list means Storyline.
Is the free period a trial?
No trial clock and no card. Paid plans arrive later with at least 30 days' notice, and accounts from the launch period keep their access for 12 months. That is stated on the pricing page, not just here.
What happens to my work if I leave?
Every deck exports to editable .pptx, PDF and HTML5. That is deliberate: a tool that holds your content hostage is one you should not adopt, and the same test is worth applying to any vendor on this page.
Which is better for cmi5?
Both export it, which already puts them ahead of most tools. The practical difference is that a Learning Record Store is included here, so there is somewhere for the statements to land without buying one.
